Welcome back from Spring Break!
Division 16 has been busy celebrating Spring. We made Easter Eggs out of coloured tissue paper (fantastic fine motor practice and hard work!) and we made cherry blossom trees out of oil pastel and popcorn. We also practiced using the sentence structure Je vois. Please come admire our bulletin board at drop-off/pick-up time!

A GROS merci to Lisa, Wendy, Mayumi, Julie, and Amy, who volunteered at our Easter celebration. Students ran relays, such as balancing an egg on a spoon, bean bag toss, potato sack races, and a mini easter egg hunt. Joyeuse Paques! I will upload photos to Dropbox soon.
This month, we began our unit on fairy tales with dress-up day! We practiced using our fairy tale vocabulary in our journals. Students looked fantastique dressed up as les chevaliers, les princesses, and les dragons, among other things! Madame Lauren dressed up as le petit chaperon rouge and read us that story. In the afternoon, we made crowns, magic wands, and puppets. We even decorated our very own giant castle! Students have been enjoying playing make-believe in the castle during les centres. |
This week, we began exploring the fairy tale Jacques et le haricot magique. Students are learning to retell the story following a given structure. Ask your child to practice retelling the story with you at home using this week’s vocabulary: “Jacques coupe la tige avec une hache!” They are using so much French now, it is amazing! |
We practiced reading a simplified version of the story while tracking with our finger. I am seeing so much reading and pre-reading happening, already. Thank you for keeping up with the Home Reading program. This term, we will focus on learning our high-frequency words (e.g. le, la, je, j'aime, etc.) and the Home-Reading program is a big part of that! Students build confidence with these emergent reader books. They are so proud to read their books in front of the class! |
To finish off the week, we planted “magic beans” in the playground. Students were excited to see what would happen. When we came back outside with our Big Buddies, the magic beans had grown into a huge beanstalk! It went all the way up the slide. There was a Géant standing at the very top of the playground castle, shouting “Fa Fe Fi Fo Fu Fé!” Students took turns trying to steal la poule, la harpe, and les pièces d’or while the Géant chased them! I have added these materials to our castle so that students can play at retelling the tale during les centres. In the afternoon, we continued the fun with an art activity, spelling our name out of magic beans. |
This week, we will be celebrating Earth Day by planting beans (real beans of the non-magical variety) and documenting their growth in our science journals.
I hope you enjoyed the sunshine this weekend! See you tomorrow!
